Quantity demanded: the amount buyers want to buy at one specific price.
Demand Schedule & Demand Curve
Lily
| Price per cup | $2 | $3 | $4 | $5 | $6 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Quantity demanded (cups/week) | 8 | 6 | 4 | 3 | 2 |
Why Does Demand Slope Downward?
Individual vs. Market Demand
| Price | Amy | Ben | Market |
|---|---|---|---|
| $6 | 1 | 0 | 1 |
| $5 | 2 | 1 | 3 |
| $4 | 3 | 2 | 5 |
| $3 | 4 | 3 | 7 |
| $2 | 5 | 4 | 9 |
Movement Along vs. Shift of the Curve 沿曲线移动 vs. 曲线平移
题目说“the price of X rises, so the demand for X decreases”是错的——应该说 quantity demanded decreases。
For each event, decide whether the demand curve for electric vehicles (EVs) shifts right, shifts left, or whether there is a movement along the demand curve.

Law of supply: other things equal, a higher price leads to a higher quantity supplied.
| Price per box | $2 | $3 | $4 | $5 | $6 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Quantity supplied (boxes/day) | 1 | 3 | 5 | 6 | 7 |
For each event, decide whether the supply curve of eggs shifts right, shifts left, or whether there is a movement along the supply curve.

2.3Price Elasticity of Demand
The Midpoint Method
A bubble tea shop raises its price from $5 to $6 per cup, and daily sales fall from 100 cups to 80 cups. (a) Calculate the price elasticity of demand using the midpoint method. (b) Is demand elastic or inelastic? (c) What happens to the shop's total revenue?
Five Ranges of PED

2.4Price Elasticity of Supply
Determinants of PES

(a) When average income rises by 10%, the quantity of overseas trips demanded rises by 25%, the quantity of bus rides demanded falls by 5%, and the quantity of rice demanded rises by 3%. Calculate each YED and classify each good.
(b) When the price of coffee rises by 20%, the quantity of tea demanded rises by 10%. When the price of printers rises by 10%, the quantity of ink cartridges demanded falls by 15%. Calculate each XED and identify the relationship.
|---|---|---|---|
| PED | Qd of the good | its own price | |PED|
| PES | Qs of the good | its own price |
| YED | Qd of the good | income |
| XED | Qd of good A | price of good B |

2.6Market Equilibrium & Consumer/Producer Surplus
Consumer Surplus
Producer Surplus
Surplus in a Market Graph
In the bubble tea market above (quantity in thousands of cups), demand is P = 12 − Q and supply is P = Q. Calculate consumer surplus, producer surplus, and total economic surplus at equilibrium.

2.7Disequilibrium & Changes in Equilibrium
Shortage & Surplus

Both Curves Shift

Related Markets
An outbreak of African swine fever kills a large share of pigs. 2.8Government Intervention in Markets
Price Ceiling
Price Floor
Using the lettered graph above (D: P = 12 − Q, S: P = Q), identify consumer surplus, producer surplus, and deadweight loss (a) at equilibrium, (b) with a price ceiling of $4, and (c) with a price floor of $8. Calculate each value.
| Equilibrium | Ceiling $4 | Floor $8 | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quantity traded | 6 | 4(Qs) | 4(Qd) |
| CS | A + B + C = 18 | A + B + D = 24 | A = 8 |
| PS | D + E + F = 18 | F = 8 | B + D + F = 24 |
| DWL | 0 | C + E = 4 | C + E = 4 |
| Total surplus | 36 | 32 | 32 |
Per-Unit (Excise) Tax 从量税
对每卖出一单位征收固定金额 t(例如每包烟 $3)。
The government imposes a $3 per-unit tax on sellers in the market above. Find (a) the new quantity, the price buyers pay, and the price sellers keep; (b) tax revenue and how much of the tax each side bears per unit; (c) consumer surplus, producer surplus, and deadweight loss after the tax.
Tax Incidence
Per-Unit Subsidy 补贴
Instead of a tax, the government gives sellers a $3 per-unit subsidy. Find the new quantity, the prices buyers pay and sellers receive, the government's cost, and the deadweight loss.
Quantity Controls (Quotas)

2.9International Trade & Public Policy

2.1 Demand
自身价格 → 沿曲线移动;TRIBE(偏好、相关商品价格、收入、买家数量、预期)→ 曲线平移。2.2 Supply
ROTTEN(投入品价格、其他商品价格、技术、税与补贴、预期、卖家数量)→ 供给平移;供给增加 = 右移(看起来向下)。2.3 PED
|%ΔQd ÷ %ΔP|,中点法。>1 elastic,<1 inelastic,=1 unit。
2.5 YED & XED
2.6 Equilibrium & Surplus
Qd = Qs。CS = WTP − 价格(需求曲线下、价格上);PS = 价格 − 成本(价格下、供给曲线上)。竞争均衡使总剩余最大 → 有效率。2.7 Changes
2.8 Government Intervention
- YED、XED

The markets for bananas, muffins, and coffee are interrelated, and each market is perfectly competitive.
(a) In the market for bananas, the equilibrium price is $1.00 per pound, and the equilibrium quantity is 1,000 pounds per week. Suppose the government imposes a price floor on bananas at $1.20 per pound, causing the quantity supplied to increase to 1,500 pounds per week.
(i) Would the price floor result in a shortage, a surplus, or neither? Explain.
(ii) Calculate the price elasticity of supply if the price increases from $1 to $1.20. Show your work.
(iii) Between $1 and $1.20, is the supply elastic, unit elastic, or inelastic? Explain.
(b) Bananas are an input for muffins.
(i) Draw a correctly labeled graph of the market for muffins indicating the equilibrium price and quantity, labeled P0 and Q0, respectively.
(ii) On the graph drawn in part (b)(i), show the impact of an increase in the price of bananas on the muffin market, labeling the new equilibrium price and quantity P1 and Q1, respectively.
(iii) On the same graph, completely shade the area that represents the change in the consumer surplus caused by the increase in the price of bananas.
(c) In the market for coffee, the equilibrium price is $3.00 per cup and the equilibrium quantity is 100 cups per week. The cross-price elasticity of coffee with respect to muffins is negative two.
(i) Are coffee and muffins normal goods, inferior goods, complementary goods, or substitute goods?
(ii) Assume the supply of coffee is perfectly elastic. Using the equilibrium price and quantity given above, draw a correctly labeled graph for the coffee market, and show the impact of an increase in the price of muffins on the coffee market.
(iii) Given the original quantity of 100 cups of coffee per week, if the increase in the price of muffins is 10%, calculate the new equilibrium quantity in the coffee market. Show your work.
